Turning Up the Heat

It’s funny; when we got here, it felt like we had been here for forever. Now it seems as though minutes pass before we can even realize that the day has come and gone.

In just 3.5 days, we’ve completed 11 interviews, taken thousands of pictures, and captured hours of b-roll. We are on fire. The thing about being the first professional chapter of Students of the World is that we’re shooting to produce the same amount of work as the student teams in a fraction of the time. The adrenaline is pumping through our veins because we know we’ve got something powerful here that we’re going to put together. We can’t imagine producing anything less than a true emotional experience when people watch our film. This school needs us, and as odd as it may seem — we’ve found that not only do we need the school back, but Jacmel needs it, Haiti needs it, and quite frankly — the world needs it too.

This institution was founded on the principle of making the world a better place through teaching the international language of music. Students don’t go to school because they have to but because they want to. It’s still a mechanism for survival like it is here in the States, but the difference is the motivation behind the survival. In the US, we go to school so that we can get a job to pay for the things we need and want in life. Here in Jacmel, students go to Baptiste Dessaix so they can live … because as we’ve found through our interviews, music is life. They’re not thinking about what kind of paycheck they’re going to get with their degree from the school; instead, music is a way of being. It’s therapy that feeds the soul.

In addition to working, we’re making time for fun, too. Last night we went for dinner at Kathias, a delicious Haitian restuarant. The owner, Kathia, makes the most divine food. For example, we’ve had Haitian chicken with creole sauce, rice, fried plaintains, creole tart, goat, home made pizza, burgers, and fresh avocado. We got caught in a downpour, the power went out, and we ended up eating by candlelight. It was really nice.

After dinner we went to a Karaoke competition that was like American Idol. We’re unsure of how far along they were in the competition, but it was really entertaining to say the least. The whole night was just what we needed after long days of working at the school.

Today we went to the school this morning to get some more b-roll and do another interview. Now, we’re taking time to relax and are headed to the beach for the rest of the day…

Signing out,
